2/17/2006 NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Currey Tennis Center will host a Commodore doubleheader this Sunday featuring the women’s tennis team as they take on Baylor, followed by the men facing Butler University. Women’s tennis will kick off the action at 10 a.m. with the #10 Baylor Bears. The Bears (6-1) boast three players in the top 100, including #9 Zuzana Cerna. In singles play, undefeated Cerna will likely face Vanderbilt’s Taka Bertrand, also undefeated, at the No. 2 seed. #17 Zuzana Zemenova is currently Baylor’s No. 1 seed and is 4-3 overall for 2006. The Commodores current No.1 singles player is Amanda Fish, who has only dropped one singles match this season (6-1). In doubles action, Baylor’s Zemenova/Daniel Covello duo has consistently held down the No. 1 seed (4-2) and may take on VU’s Maggie Yahner and Amanda Taylor. Taylor and Yahner have played the top seed in doubles the past five matches (3-2) for the Commodores. Last year in Waco, Texas, the Commodores’ doubles point gave VU the winning edge over the Bears (4-3). “Baylor is one of the best teams in the country,” Vanderbilt Women’s Tennis Coach Geoff Macdonald said. “They are team of seasoned international players and we are really excited to be hosting them.” Following the VU/Baylor conclusion, the men will take the courts against Butler University. Butler is currently 4-6, with a recent 7-0 loss to No. 12 Ohio State. The Bulldogs will return to Indianapolis to host Bradley on Saturday before taking on Vanderbilt in Nashville on Sunday. Commodore freshman Nik Cromydas will be entering the contest undefeated (5- 0), as well as No. 2 seed doubles team Andy Mack and Evan Dufaux (5-0). “Right now I’m really interested seeing that we execute well and improve from match to match,” Vanderbilt Men’s Tennis Coach Ian Duvenhage said. Sunday’s match will be a homecoming for Butler Head Coach Jason Suscha. Suscha got his collegiate coaching start at Vanderbilt ten years ago when he served as an assistant coach for Bill Tym in 1995. Following Tym’s resignation, Suscha became Vanderbilt’s interim head coach for four matches in 1997. |
