RJ Schreck was selected by the Seattle Mariners

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt outfielder RJ Schreck was selected in the ninth round with the 277th overall pick of the 2023 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Seattle Mariners on Monday.

Schreck played one season at Vanderbilt after a four-year career at Duke. He hit .306 with a team-high 14 home runs and 59 RBIs, also most by a Dore. Schreck also led Vanderbilt in slugging (.588) and on-base percentage (.454).

A Los Angeles native, Schreck was named Academic All-America in 2023, the first Vandy baseball student-athlete to earn the award since 1999.

Schreck is the sixth Commodore selected in this year’s draft after Enrique Bradfield Jr. was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the first round, Hunter Owen was taken in the fourth round by the Kansas City Royals, Patrick Reilly was selected in the fifth round by the Pittsburgh Pirates, Nick Maldonado went to the Miami Marlins in the eighth round and Thomas Schultz was taken by the Washington Nationals in the ninth round.

The draft continues through Round 10 on Monday before wrapping up with Rounds 11-20 on Tuesday.
