On Monday, Oct. 24, the Vanderbilt women’s lacrosse team played host to the annual Marathon Game fundraiser on the turf field at the John Rich Practice Facility.
The Commodores participated in an extended scrimmage last Monday, asking for supporters to sponsor the team’s three hours of lacrosse by the minute, at any denomination. Proceeds from the event help the lacrosse program directly.
“Dating back to 2006, we’ve been using this game as a fundraiser to travel internationally,” VU Head Coach Cathy Swezey said. “People have been very generous, and we’ve received excellent support. It really does go a long way to allow our girls some wonderful opportunities.”
The Commodores took a nine-day trip to Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic in 2009 just weeks ahead of the Women’s World Cup. The squad played a pair of games on that trip, but
For the second half of the marathon game, the lacrosse team shared the field with department staff, members of Vanderbilt’s Greek community and other student-athletes. This year, Peabody Assistant Professor of Human and Organziational Development Andy Van Schaack was a special guest of the team, along with his two children.
“We try to use it as kind of an outreach, too,” Swezey said. “To get people interested in supporting us during the spring. We invite people to come out on the field and play with us. People get to see how hard our sport is to play. I think they really get to enjoy it as well.”
