NEWPORT, R.I. – Newport outfielder Joey Manning has been named the New England Collegiate Baseball League Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
Manning, who plays his collegiate ball for Vanderbilt University, batted .429 (6-for-14) over four games last week for the Gulls. He had one home run, two doubles, four runs batted in and four runs scored to help Newport post a 3-2 record on the week. Manning also walked twice, giving him a .500 on-base percentage and a .786 slugging percentage for the week.
For the season, Manning has started nine of Newport’s 10 games thus far, helping the team to a 6-4 record, good for first place in the NECBL Southern Division. With the recent hot stretch, Manning has raised his overall batting average to .333 (11-for-33) with two home runs, two doubles, eight runs scored and six RBI. He is tied for the team lead with six walks, giving him a .436 on-base percentage thus far.
Manning is the second Gull to earn Player of the Week honors. Last week, catcher Mike Melillo earned the nod, giving Newport two honorees in the first two weeks of the season.
