Commodores resume schedule with New Jersey tournament

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — After a two-week tournament layoff, Vanderbilt returns to action Friday at the Northeast Classic in Deptford, New Jersey, co-hosted by Long Island University and Sacred Heart.

LIU head coach Kayla Jones and Sacred Heart head coach Becky Kregling have put together a who’s who of ranked teams for the event. Competition will take place at the Bowlero Deptford.

FORMAT/TIMES

It’s a standard format with play beginning at 10 a.m. CT Friday, continuing at 8:30 a.m. CT Saturday and concluding Sunday with three best-of-seven Baker clashes to determine the final team standings that begins at 7:30 a.m. CT.

COMPETING TEAMS (RANK)

Eight top-10 ranked teams will be in the hunt for the tournament title as will 17 of the top 25: Chestnut Hill, Delaware State (14), Duquesne (12), Fairleigh Dickinson (15), Lincoln Memorial (22), LIU (17), Maryville (10), McKendree (2), Medaille, Monmouth (25), Mount Aloysius, Mount Saint Mary’s (9), North Carolina A&T (4), Sacred Heart (19), Sam Houston (1), Stephen F. Austin (10), Maryland-Eastern Shore (18), Wisconsin-Whitewater (20), Vanderbilt (5), Wilmington and Youngstown State (8).

NORTHEAST CLASSIC HISTORY

Vanderbilt won the inaugural tournament in 2020 behind Maria Bulanova’s Most Valuable Player performance. The Commodores blanked McKendree 4-0 in the championship match. Vandy did not participate in the event a year ago, in part due to travel limitations due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

LAST TIME OUT

Vandy was fourth at the Stormin’ Blue and White Vegas Classic. Mabel Cummins and Caroline Thesier were all-tournament team honorees. The Commodores are 43-19 on the season.
