MURFREESBORO, Tenn. –Five Vanderbilt student-athletes competed in the third day of the ITA Ohio Valley Regionals on Saturday at the Adams Tennis Complex.
Three Commodores opened the day battling in the singles Round of 16 with freshman Marcella Cruz advancing to the singles quarterfinals by notching a straight set victory over Kentucky’s Tkachenko.
The freshman commanded an early lead over Tkachenko with a 7-5 victory in the first set. In the second set, Cruz batted back from a 0-3 deficit to claim the match with a 6-4 win, securing her spot in the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinals, Cruz faced No. 2 seeded Kaitlin Staines (Tennessee). Cruz fought hard but fell short, 6-2, 6-2, concluding her singles run in the tournament.
In doubles, Commodore duo Anna Ross and Emma Kurtz marked their spot in the semifinals besting Memphis pair, Teixido-Garcia and Cao, 8-1, claiming their third-consecutive victory of the tournament.
Vanderbilt will open the fourth day of the tournament on Sunday with the singles consolation matches followed by Ross and Kurtz competing in the doubles semifinals at 11 a.m. CT.
