BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Following a weekend where Vanderbilt’s men’s tennis team earned a pair of wins against Big Ten foes to move to 6-2 on the season, Commodore freshman Ryan Lipman was tabbed on Wednesday as the Southeastern Conference’s Men’s Tennis Freshman of the Week for his role in the two victories.
A Nashville native, Lipman helped Vanderbilt defeat No. 38 Northwestern, 6-1, and undefeated Purdue, 7-0, last weekend by winning both of his singles matches in the No. 1 position and teaming with Charlie Jones to go 2-0 in the No. 2 doubles slot.
Ranked No. 29 in singles, Lipman clinched the first match of his college career when he defeated Northwestern’s Joshua Graves, 6-4, 6-4, after trailing 4-1 in the first set.
Lipman followed his win against Graves by defeating Purdue’s Slavko Bijelica, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, in the No. 1 position. Lipman, the only freshman on Vanderbilt’s roster, is now 5-2 this spring in the No. 1 slot.
In doubles play, Lipman and Jones improved to 4-2 this spring with wins over Northwestern’s duo of Reitz and Wolf, 9-8 (7-5), and Purdue’s tandem of Bijelica and Wilson, 8-6.
Vanderbilt is off from competition this week and will return to the courts on Feb. 19 when the Commodores travel to 16th-ranked Louisville.
