NEW YORK – Vanderbilt freshman Ryan Lipman had his hopes of making the main draw of the 2009 U.S. Open come to an end Tuesday when he lost his first round qualifying singles match to Illya Marchenko.
A Nashville native, Lipman was eliminated by Marchenko, a Ukrainian, 6-4, 7-6(5). In order to make the main draw of the U.S. Open, players have to win three consecutive matches in the qualifying draw.
Lipman earned a spot in the qualifying singles draw by finishing runner-up at the USTA Boys’ 18 National Championships in mid-August. Lipman was one of 128 players in the qualifying draw.
