Keeping the Pace

Vanderbilt maintains its lead at the 2024 West Lafayette Regional after carding 5-under 283 in Round 2

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The No. 1-seeded Vanderbilt men’s golf team held on to first place through 36 holes at the 2024 West Lafayette Regional, as the Commodores sit at 16-under 560 at the end of play on Tuesday.

The Dores carded 5-under 283 in Round 2. Vandy had to fight off host Purdue, who went 11-under on the day, to maintain the top spot on the team leaderboard going into Wednesday’s finale. The Commodores head into Round 3 of the West Lafayette Regional holding a one-stroke lead over the Boilermakers.

“It was good again to have all five of our guys in contention all day and it was good to see some of them bounce back,” said Vanderbilt men’s golf head coach Scott Limbaugh. “We had a little more adversity today in more scoreable conditions with less wind, but it was really good to see the team respond well to that adversity. I think we played a little better than what we ended up scoring today. We didn’t quite finish to our standards. We know we’ve got to own the things that we can own, have an aggressive mindset, and keep moving forward.”

Graduate senior William Moll led the way for Vanderbilt in Round 2, as the Houston, Texas, native carded a team-best 3-under 69 on Tuesday. The All-American climbed up three spots on the player leaderboard in the round to finish tied for second with teammate Gordon Sargent, who concluded Round 2 at even par. Moll and Sargent head into Wednesday’s final round at 5-under 139, just three strokes off the lead.

“I’m super proud of William,” expressed Limbaugh. “We are a different team when he has things clicking. He had a bogey on Hole 16, but he refocused, locked in, and finished strong on his final two holes.”

Senior Cole Sherwood also heads into Round 3 in a tie for fifth at 4-under 140. The Austin, Texas, native overcame a slow start to the day, as he strung together three-straight birdies on Holes 6-8 to put him at 1-under at the turn. The All-American finished the back nine at even par to conclude Round 2 of the West Lafayette Regional at 1-under 71.

Graduate student Matthew Riedel also finished Round 2 at 1-under 71, as he and junior Jackson Van Paris are tied for 22nd on the player leaderboard at the end of play on Tuesday. Van Paris goes into the final round of the tournament leading the field in pars with 32.

Vanderbilt opens the final round of the 2024 West Lafayette Regional on Wednesday at 7 a.m. CT. Fans can follow live results at GolfStat.com.

“We want to finish strong,” added Limbaugh. “I think that’s been the one thing we’ve wanted to do since our last tournament. We got to keep pushing forward with a great spirit. We want our guys to be locked in from the start and finish strong tomorrow.”
