Hoyoung Earns First Weekly Honor

Commodore named SEC Freshman of the Week after undefeated match against Alabama

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — No. 22 Vanderbilt men’s tennis freshman Hoyoung Roh concluded the final week of regular season play with a performance that earned him SEC Freshman of the Week, announced by the conference on Tuesday.

Hoyoung went 2-0 in the Commodores’ Senior Day matchup against Alabama, as Vanderbilt downed the Crimson Tide to end an eight-match skid in SEC play. Just three days after earning a career-high doubles ranking of No. 14 alongside senior Nathan Cox, Hoyoung delivered the black and gold its first doubles point since March 13. Playing at the top doubles position, Cox and Hoyoung knocked off No. 8 Vit Kalina and Andrii Zimnokh to clinch the early point. It was the second win over a top-10 opponent in eight days for the pair after taking down Florida’s No. 8 Henry Jefferson and Tanapatt Nirundorn on April 10. The duo now owns four ranked victories in 14 total matches together, each of which have come against top-25 opponents.

In singles, Hoyoung followed up his doubles performance with another ranked win, 6-1, 6-1 over No. 82 Matic Kriznik. The freshman held Kriznik to his lowest scoring total out of the entire dual match season. Hoyoung’s win produced Vanderbilt’s third point en route to a 4-0 Commodore victory to close out the regular season.

No. 22 Vanderbilt eyes a tournament run at the 2026 SEC Men’s Tennis Championship hosted by Texas A&M, facing Alabama once more in the opening round on Wednesday from College Station.
