Home Runs in the Home Opener

Dores hit four out of the park in run-rule win

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt run-ruled Eastern Michigan 13-2 in seven innings Tuesday in the 2026 home opener at Hawkins Field.

Brodie Johnston mashed two home runs, including the game-ender in the seventh, to increase his season total to five over the first four games. Braden Holcomb and Tommy Goodin also went deep as Goodin registered his first collegiate homer.

The Commodores have hit 13 home runs this season with Johnston’s five leading the way.

Freshman Tyler Baird got the start on the mound and went 3.2 innings. He held Eastern Michigan scoreless until the fourth when the Eagles pushed a pair of runs across the board. Baird finished with four strikeouts.

Vandy got the scoring going early with three runs in the first, one in the second and three more in the third. After the Eagles got on the board in the fourth, the Dores responded with three more in the home half to lead 9-2.

The Commodores extended the lead with two more runs in the sixth before Johnston’s two-run blast in the seventh ended the game.

Eastern Michigan (1-3) and Vanderbilt (2-2) meet again Wednesday at 4:30. The game will air on SECN+ with a radio broadcast on 94.9 The Fan.
