Gibson, Keenan honored by IWLCA

Sept. 3, 2009

Rising seniors Megan Gibson and Laura Keenan were honored Thursday as the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) announced its 2009 Academic Squad.

Both Gibson and Keenan are majoring in Human and Organizational Development at Vanderbilt’s prestigious Peabody College of Education. The pair started all 17 games for the Commodores a year ago, helping to lead the team to its third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.

A total of 407 student-athletes from 152 institutions were recognized for their excellence in the classroom during the 2008-09 academic year. All student-athletes were nominated by their institutions and have attained at least junior standing academically.

Nominees considered had a GPA of at least 3.5 or were in the top 10 percent of their squad. Princeton’s Kristin Schwab was named the Division I IWLCA Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Vanderbilt returns 11 of 12 starters for the upcoming 2010 season, which is scheduled to begin in February. The Commodores will make trips to Pennsylvania and North Carolina in October for preseason “Fall Ball” games.
