SAN DIEGO – Pitching led the Vanderbilt Commodores to a doubleheader sweep over San Diego Sunday afternoon at Cunningham Stadium with the Dores winning the first game 3-1 and the nightcap 7-3.
Lefty Grayson Garvin tossed 8.1 innings to earn his first win of the year in the second game. Garvin struck out 10 and allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits. The junior pitched six perfect innings before an infield single off his glove ended the bid and he lost the shutout in the ninth. The Commodores jumped out to an early lead with six runs in the first four innings. Tony Kemp, Mike Yastrzemski and Aaron Westlake all had two hits to lead VU.
In the first game Taylor Hill pitched the Commodores to a 3-1 victory. The senior right-hander allowed one run on five hits with no walks. Hill did not allow a hit until fifth inning when USD tied the ballgame at 1-1. Vanderbilt took the lead late in the game, scoring two runs in seventh inning. Pinch hitter Bryan Johns delivered the lead with a RBI-double and Tony Kemp extended the lead with a single to score Connor Harrell, who had singled. The bullpen duo of Mark Lamm and Navery Moore did the rest to conserve the win. Lamm coaxed an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded to get the Dores out of a jam in the eighth inning and Moore pitched around a single in the ninth earn his first save of the year.
The Commodores return to Nashville to open up the home schedule with a game against Belmont on Wednesday at Hawkins Field.
