Nashville, Tenn. – Grayson Garvin and Sonny Gray have been named semifinalists for the Golden Spikes Award, which is given to the nation’s top amateur player.
The duo helped lead the Commodores to a share of the Southeastern Conference regular season championship combining for 22 of the team’s 47 wins so far this year. Garvin was named SEC Pitcher of the Year and is the first pitcher in SEC history to go 10-0 in SEC play. The lefty was also tabbed as an All-SEC first team performer and tied the school record with 12 wins this season. Gray is four wins away from matching the school record for career wins after winning 10 games this season. Gray was named to the All-SEC second team, All-Defensive team and SEC All-Tournament team.
Only one Commodore has won the Golden Spikes Award in the award’s 34-year history when David Price earned the honor in 2007.
Vanderbilt begins the NCAA Tournament on Friday at Hawkins Field hosting a regional for just the second time in school history. The Commodores open regional play against cross-town rival Belmont at 7 p.m. Oklahoma State and Troy begin the tournament at 2 p.m.
