About South Carolina
Coach: Steve Spurrier (6th year, 35-28)
Conference: Southeastern (East)
Colors: Garnet and Black
2009 record: 7-6, 3-5 SEC
Postseason: PapaJohns.com Bowl (Lost to Connecticut, 20-7)
Highest ranking/Final ranking: 21/unranked
Returning starters: 17 (8 offense, 7 defense, 2 special teams)
Most impressive win of 2009: The Gamecocks defeated in-state rival Clemson, ranked 15th in the country and winners of six straight games, for the first time in three years during Rivalry Week on Nov. 28 with a 34-17 victory. South Carolina also knocked off then-No. 4 Ole Miss earlier in the season; however, the Rebels would tumble in the rankings by season’s end.
Worst loss: Tennessee battered South Carolina in Knoxville by a score of 31-13 on Oct. 31, the most lopsided defeat of the year for the Gamecocks. It would be the first of three straight defeats in another late-season slump for Spurrier’s team.
Last time South Carolina played Vanderbilt: The Gamecocks scored a fourth-quarter touchdown and staved off the Commodores’ comeback attempt in a 14-10 victory on Oct. 24 in Columbia. Warren Norman returned a kickoff for a touchdown for the second time in three weeks and would follow it up with another the following week against Georgia Tech.
Vanderbilt-South Carolina series: South Carolina leads 15-4. The Gamecocks snapped a two-game losing streak in the series with last year’s close victory, after the Commodores had defeated ranked South Carolina squads in 2007 and 2008.
Notes: No other team in the SEC has a higher winning percentage against the Commodores than South Carolina … The Gamecocks will return more starters than any other Vanderbilt opponent this season with 17 … Steve Spurrier has lost 28 games in five seasons at South Carolina after losing 27 in 12 seasons at Florida … The Commodores have 13 sacks in their last three meetings with the Gamecocks … South Carolina has also been ranked the last three times the teams have met but has finished the season unranked every time.
