About Georgia

Coach: Mark Richt (10th year, 90-27)

Colors: Red and Black

Conference: Southeastern (East)

2009 record: 8-5, 4-4 SEC

Postseason: Independence Bowl (Defeated Texas A&M, 44-20)

Highest ranking/Final ranking: 13/unranked

Returning starters: 18 (10 offense, 6 defense, 2 special teams)

Most impressive win of 2009: Salvaging a disappointing season, the Bulldogs continued their dominance of the in-state rivalry with Georgia Tech by knocking off the 7th-ranked Yellow Jackets 30-24 on Nov. 28. It gave Georgia a measure of revenge for losing to Tech a year before and improved Richt’s record to 8-1 against the Jackets. Georgia Tech would go on to win the ACC Championship and play in the Orange Bowl.

Worst loss: Tennessee crushed the Bulldogs at Neyland Stadium on Oct. 10, 45-19, scoring 21 consecutive points to close the game. It marked the first conference win of the season for the Volunteers. It also marked the first time Georgia had ever fallen to a 3-3 record under Richt.

Last time Georgia played Vanderbilt: It was Homecoming for the Commodores. The Bulldogs scored 17 unanswered points in the second half to win 34-10 on Oct. 17. Vanderbilt scored a touchdown on its opening possession of the second half but couldn’t find any offense after that.

Vanderbilt-Georgia series: Georgia leads 50-18-2. Since the Commodores stunned the Bulldogs between the hedges in 2006 on a last-second field goal by Bryant Hahnfeldt, the Bulldogs have won three in a row in this annual series. Overall, Georgia has won 14 of the last 15 match-ups between the teams.

Notes: Mark Richt is the conference’s longest-tenured coach… Georgia was the third-worst team in the nation last year in turnover ratio at -1.23 per game … The Bulldogs have scored at least 20 points on Vanderbilt every year since 1996; no other SEC East team has done that … Sanford Stadium is the biggest venue Vanderbilt will play in this season, but it is only the third-biggest in the SEC behind Alabama’s Bryant-Denny Stadium and Tennessee’s Neyland Stadium … ESPN’s Chris Low rates Georgia wide receiver A.J. Green as the second-best player in the SEC behind only Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram.
