About LSU
Coach: Les Miles (6th year, 51-15)
Conference: Southeastern (West)
Colors: Purple and Gold
2009 record: 9-4, 5-3 SEC
Postseason: Capital One Bowl (Lost to Penn State, 19-17)
Highest ranking/Final ranking: 4/17
Returning starters: 12 (6 offense, 4 defense, 2 special teams)
Most impressive win of 2009: In a series that had been close in recent years, LSU routed Auburn 31-10 at Tiger Stadium on Oct. 24. Auburn wound up finishing 8-5 on the season; the 10 points they scored against LSU represented a season low.
Worst loss: In one of the stranger conclusions to an SEC game in 2009, the Tigers mismanaged the clock at the end of a 25-23 loss to unranked Ole Miss on Nov. 21. Jordan Jefferson hit Terrance Toliver with a 43-yard pass on fourth down to put the Tigers at the Rebel 5-yard line, but confusion reigned and time expired before LSU could get off another play.
Last time LSU played Vanderbilt: The Tigers and Commodores clashed last Sept. 12 on a rainy night at Tiger Stadium. LSU outlasted Vanderbilt, 23-9, in both teams’ conference openers. It was quarterback Larry Smith’s first start against an SEC team.
Vanderbilt-LSU series: LSU leads 21-7-1. Overall, LSU has won the last six games in this series since the Commodores last triumphed, a 24-21 victory at Vanderbilt Stadium in 1990.
Notes: Les Miles tops Tiger coaches in all-time winning percentage at LSU at .773 … Jordan Jefferson was LSU’s second youngest starting quarterback in a season opener in 2009 against Washington at just over 19 years of age; his third career start came the following week against the Commodores … The Tigers have held Vanderbilt under 10 points in four straight meetings … Zac Stacy rushed for 89 yards against LSU last season, giving him an average of 111 rushing yards over the season’s first two games … LSU has won 17 of its past 18 games played before October.
