About Wake Forest
Coach: Jim Grobe (10th year, 59-51)
Conference: Atlantic Coast (Atlantic)
Colors: Gold and Black
2009 record: 5-7, 3-5 ACC
Postseason: None
Highest ranking/Final ranking: Unranked/Unranked
Returning starters: 15 (6 offense, 7 defense, 2 special teams)
Most impressive win of 2009: In their second game of the season, the Demon Deacons defeated Stanford at BB&T Field 24-17, to even their season record at 1-1. Wake Forest overcame a 14-point deficit against the Cardinal, who were denied their first 2-0 start since 2004 but would go on to defeat three ranked opponents and earn an invitation to the Sun Bowl.
Worst loss: After a 4-2 start, the Demon Deacons were schooled by Clemson in Death Valley, 38-3, on Oct. 17, starting a five-game losing streak that dropped Wake Forest out of contention for bowl eligibility. It marked the first time the Deacons were held without a touchdown in 14 games dating back to a shutout loss to Maryland in 2008.
Last time Wake Forest played Vanderbilt: It was the final game of the 2008 season, a cold day in Winston-Salem where the Demon Deacons came away with a sloppy 23-10 win. Despite the loss, the Commodores finished the season 6-6 and earned a berth in the Music City Bowl where they’d knock off another ACC foe in Boston College.
Vanderbilt-Wake Forest series: Vanderbilt leads 7-5. The Commodores had won four straight match-ups before dropping their last two meetings with the Demon Deacons in 2007 and 2008.
Notes: The teams are in the midst of an annual series from 2007-2015, with 2009 the only year during that time that they wouldn’t meet … Grobe’s 59 wins in the past decade at Wake Forest are the most by any coach of the Deacons in the ACC era … After ranking in the top 20 in takeaways every year from 2006-2008, the Demon Deacons slipped to 83rd in 2009 … Five of Wake Forest’s seven losses last year were by three points or fewer … The Commodores defeated Wake Forest in season openers in 1993, 1994 and 2005, but are still searching for a win in the series in a season closer.
