About Tennessee

Coach: Derek Dooley (1st year, 0-0)

Conference: Southeastern (East)

Colors: Orange and White

2009 record: 7-6, 4-4 SEC

Postseason: Chick-fil-A Bowl (Lost to Virginia Tech, 37-14)

Highest ranking/Final ranking: Unranked/Unranked

Returning starters: 13 (4 offense, 7 defense, 2 special teams)

Most impressive win of 2009: It would have been against top-ranked Alabama were it not for the outstretched hands of Terrence Cody to block Daniel Lincoln’s field goal attempt and preserve a 12-10 Crimson Tide win on Oct. 17. Instead, Tennessee’s 45-19 throttling of Georgia at Neyland Stadium on Oct. 10 served notice to the conference that the Volunteers were not going quietly in 2009.

Worst loss: In what turned out to be Lane Kiffin’s final game as Tennessee’s head coach, the Volunteers were rocked by Virginia Tech in the Chick-fil-A bowl at the Georgia Dome, 37-14. A close game at halftime turned into a rout as the Hokies ran all over Tennessee after intermission.

Last time Tennessee played Vanderbilt: The Volunteers ended the season for the Commodores with a 31-16 victory on Nov. 21 at Neyland Stadium. Vanderbilt had numerous opportunities but could only muster one touchdown in its eighth straight loss.

Vanderbilt-Tennessee series: Tennessee leads 71-28-5. The Commodores have only beaten their oldest rival once in the last 27 years, a 28-24 victory in Knoxville in 2005. Vanderbilt hasn’t defeated the Vols at home since 1982.

Notes: The Volunteers are Vanderbilt’s oldest rival, and the teams have played each other 104 times starting in 1892 … Tennessee had two head coaches from 1977-2007 but has had three different head coaches since 2008 … The Vols have lost 17 games over the past three seasons, the most in a three-year span since dropping 17 from 1977-1979 … Tennessee scored 228 points in the 2008 regular season and 367 the following regular season, an improvement of nearly 12 points per game … The Vols have failed to score in the third quarter in four of the past five games against the Commodores.
