AUBURN, Ala. – As the third and final day of the SEC Fall Coaches Classic wrapped up, the two freshmen on the Vanderbilt women’s tennis team captured singles championships in their first collegiate tournament. Alex Leatu and Lauren Mira, as well as Erica Robertson won their flights and helped the Commodores tally 16 wins in singles play this weekend.
Leatu dropped her first set, 4-6, in the championship match of Flight 3B to Florida’s Olivia Janowicz, but claimed the second set, 7-6(5) and clinched the title with a 6-1 win in the third set. In the Flight 4A title match, Mira had no trouble defeating Auburn’s Paulina Schippers, 6-3, 6-0. Robertson claimed the third championship of the afternoon for the Commodores with a three-set win over Valentina Starkova of Arkansas.
In Flight 5B, Megan Gornet picked up her third win of the weekend with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Rachael Hart of Georgia. Rachael Dillon defeated Alabama’s Mary Anne Macfarlane, 7-6(5), 1-6, 7-5 in the consolation final of Flight 1B.
In all, the Commodores picked up 24 wins in the first tournament of the fall, with eight in doubles play and 16 in singles action.
Vanderbilt returns to the courts Sept. 24 at the Furman Fall Classic in Greenville, S.C.
