GREENVILLE, S.C. — Vanderbilt’s national top-five recruiting class showed what they are capable of as freshmen Jackie Wu and Chelsea Preeg advanced to the finals of their respective flights during the second day of the Furman Fall Classic on Saturday.
Wu, competing in her first event as a Commodore, defeated North Carolina’s Shinann Featherston and Florida State’s Ania Rynarzewska in straight sets to clinch a spot in tomorrow’s draw-three championship. The Holmdel, N.J.,native will square off against Georgia Rose of Northwestern at 9 a.m.,Sunday morning for the third-flight championship.
Preeg advanced to Sunday’s fifth-flight bracket championship after knocking off Jessica Wente of Florida State in three sets, 6-0, 5-7, 6-4. Earlier in the day the Naples, Fla., native defeated Clemson’s Federica van Adrichem in straight sets. Preeg will match-up against Tennessee’s Jessica Orlin in tomorrow’s final at 10:30 a.m.
Catherine Newman and Erica Robertson advanced to tomorrow’s third-place match in the first and sixth-flight draws, respectively. Newman started the day by defeating Elena Chernyakova of Northwestern 6-2, 6-4 before falling to No. 54 Ana Zubori in the second round.
Robertson clinched a spot in tomorrow’s third-place match after knocking off North Carolina’s Jocelyn Friend in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. The freshmanfrom Watertown, Mass., will face off against Furman’s Jennifer Betts.
Courtney and Keilly Ulery and junior Hannah Blatt battled back after dropping their first-round matches to advance to tomorrow’s fifth-place match.
The 22nd annual Furman Classic will conclude tomorrow.
