Former Commodores Compete in USTA Challenger Event

8/1/2005

Former Commodores Bobby Reynolds and Scott Brown competed in a USTA Challenger event in Lexington, Kent. last week. Reynolds, who entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed and ranked 158th in the world, should see his ranking move into the top 150 after he took second place in the singles draw and won the doubles portion.

Reynolds won four matches in the 32-man main draw before succumbing to Israel’s Dudi Sela 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in the finals. Reynolds was able to split with Sela however, as he and teammate Scoville Jenkins dispatched Sela and his countryman Harel Levy in the quarterfinals of the double’s draw. They went on to win the doubles title over Russians Roger Anderson and Rik De Voest, 6-4, 6-4.

Reynolds was also able to avenge his former teammate Brown when he knocked off Tres Davis in the quarterfinals on the singles side. Davis had beaten Brown in the first round after Brown received an entry into the tournament by qualifying the previous weekend.

Reynolds, who left Vanderbilt ranked No. 1 in the nation after his junior year in 2003, led the Commodores to an SEC Championship, a NCAA National runner-up and set school marks in Career Singles Wins (99) as he became the school’s first two-time All-American.

Brown saw his collegiate tennis career come to an end this spring, but not before he left his own mark on Vanderbilt’s record book. Brown surpassed Interim Head Coach Eddie Coates for Most Doubles Wins (84) and he jumped ahead of Reynolds for Most Combined Victory when he notched No. 172.
