Former Commodore Jeremy Sowers Called Up to Pitch for the Akron Aeros (Double-A)

6/21/2005

Former Commodore All-American left-handed pitcher Jeremy Sowers (Louisville, Ky., Ballard HS) was called up today to pitch for the Akron Aeros, a Double-A team in the Eastern League. Akron leads the Southern Division with a 40-29 record.

Sowers, the #6 overall 2004 draft choice by the Cleveland Indians, was a starting pitcher for the league-leading Kinston Indians (Class-A) in the Carolina League. Sowers made 13 starts and owned an 8-3 record at Kinston. He gave up 60 hits in 71.1 innings and owned a 2.78 ERA, fourth in the league. He struck out 75 batters while walking only 19. His eight wins are tied for the lead in the league. Sowers was selected to the Single-A All-Star Team.

Sowers became the first Commodore pitcher to have multiple 100-strikeout seasons (119 in 2004 and 123 in 2003) in his three seasons at Vanderbilt. He ranks second on the Commodore All-Time strikeout list with 327 and innings pitched with 338.2 in three seasons. In his three-year Commodore career, Sowers was 23-16 with a 3.27 ERA. He struck out 327 batters and allowed only 86 walks.

Akron plays Reading tonight (Tuesday) and tomorrow (Wednesday). Sowers may start in the Wednesday contest.
