First day struggle ends in seventh

Jan. 16, 2015

JONESBORO, ARK—It was a struggle from the start as Vanderbilt won just one game out of five at the Mid-Winter Classic here Friday. As a result, the sixth-ranked Commodores have dug themselves into a seventh-place hole heading into tomorrow’s next five games. Fifteen teams are competing.

There were some rays of promise from time to time but much was dimmed by a variety of lapses that spelled doom against quality opponents. Vanderbilt managed just one game over 1,000, a win over Valparaiso in which Robyn Renslow posted a splashy 266 and got a good boost from Natalie Goodman’s 223.

Left-handers were the order of the day as Vandy used three much of the time. Freshman Katie Stark was consistently hovering around 190 and senior Rebeca Reguero provided a big spark off the bench with scores of 223-199-203-203.

Top-ranked Nebraska went 5-0 on the day and leads the standings, which are based on pin fall, with 5,114. Host Arkansas State is second, 118 pins behind.
