Espinal, Thompson Named All-Region

Pair of Dores earn ABCA honors

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt’s Alan Espinal and JD Thompson were named to the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings Southeast All-Region Second Team, the ABCA announced Tuesday.

Espinal, a senior catcher, and Thompson, a sophomore pitcher, give Vanderbilt 47 all-region honorees under head coach Tim Corbin.

Espinal hit .289 with a team-high 13 home runs this season. He was second on the team with 49 RBI and was third in doubles with 15. Espinal started 59 games, mostly behind the plate, and finished his senior campaign with a .545 slugging percentage, tied for best on the team. He was named SEC Player of the Week on March 18 after leading Vanderbilt to a three-game sweep over No. 18 Auburn.

Thompson made 12 starts for the Dores this season with a .5-2 record and 4.15 ERA. The lefty totaled 74 strikeouts over 52.0 innings. He earned Co-Pitcher of the Week honors from the SEC on May 13 after earning the win over No. 1 Tennessee with 6.0 shutout innings and nine strikeouts.
