TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team finished day one action at the Roberta Alison Fall Classic going 2-0 in doubles play and 1-4 in singles play. Day two will start with two rounds of doubles at 9 a.m., followed by the final round of singles.
“We played a lot of good competition today,” said VU assistant coach Aleke Tsoubanos. “It was a little up and down in terms of shot selection and decision making. I think we hurt ourselves in the first round of singles with too many unforced errors. We played better in the second round. Courtney picked up a quality win against a tough player from Northwestern. Now we’ll look ahead to advancing in doubles and playing better in our last round of singles.”
The opening round of singles did not go as planned for the `Dores as all three players lost their matches. Lauren Mira was upset by Amy Zhu of Michigan, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, while Courtney Colton fell to No. 76 Georgiana Patrasc of Mississippi State, 6-4, 6-2. Maggie Leavell lost to a player from Tulane after winning the opening set in a tie-break, 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-3.
Vanderbilt played better in the second round. Colton picked up the only singles win for the Commodores over No. 111 Veronica Corning of Northwestern, 6-4, 6-2. Mira was upset once again by State’s Alexandra Perper.
The Commodores opened Friday with a doubles win over Loyola Marymount, 8-2. The No. 6 doubles team of Mira and Colton had no issues knocking off the Marymount team to move into Saturday’s second round against Northwestern.
Leavell partnered up with Allie Robbins of Ole Miss and took down another Loyola Marymount team, 8-7 (4).
