MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Vanderbilt women’s tennis wrapped up the first day of action at the Memphis Invitational on Friday at the Racquet Club of Memphis.
Vanderbilt began the day in singles play with five Commodores in action. Ashleigh Antal and Megan Gornet recorded the lone wins on the first day.
Antal defeated Oklahoma’s Mia Lancaster 6-3, 6-1, and Gornet beat Paige Keating of Ole Miss 6-1, 6-0. Antal will face Memphis’ Tiffany Welcher and Gornet will take on Allie Robbins of Ole Miss Saturday morning.
Courtney Colton, Marie Casares and Maggie Leavell all fell in their opening singles matches. Colton fell to Oklahoma’s Whitney Ritchie 6-3, 6-4. The Sooners’ Hermon Brhane defeated Casares 6-2, 6-0 and Leavell was knocked off by Allie Robbins of Ole Miss 6-4, 6-4.
Colton will play Tulsa’s Michelle Farley at 9:45 a.m. in the consolation bracket of the black draw. Casares takes on Ole Miss’ Mariya Milutinovic at 9:45 a.m. as well. Finally, Leavell goes head-to-head with Tulsa’s Maria Rivera Perez.
Lauren Mira is not participating in singles action this weekend.
