NASHVILLE, Tenn. — After achieving a top-15 ITA team ranking for the first time this season, the No. 13 Vanderbilt women’s tennis team faces a litmus test on the road tomorrow against No. 1 Georgia.
Vanderbilt brings a three-match win streak into Athens, highlighted by a 5-2 victory over No. 6 LSU last Friday. The result moves the Dores to 2-1 against top-10 opponents this season. Freshman Sophia Webster brought home SEC Co-Freshman of the Week honors for her efforts against the Tigers and Ole Miss. Webster, along with senior Celia-Belle Mohr, remained at No. 14 in the most recent ITA doubles rankings. Mohr tops the black and gold in the singles rankings at No. 16. Junior Bridget Stammel follows at No. 45 and sophomore Valeria Ray rounds out the list of ranked Dores at No. 78. Ray continues to lead the conference in singles wins, producing 15 in dual matches while totaling 28 this season.
Georgia has been the top-ranked team since March 4, holding the No. 1 spot in 10 of the 11 total rankings this season. The Bulldogs are the only other team to have defeated defending-champion Texas A&M, picking up a 4-1 win to claim the ITA National Team Indoor Championship. Against Vanderbilt, Georgia holds a 39-13 all-time advantage over the Commodores. This includes a five-match win streak against the black and gold, who last notched a victory in 2018.
Leading the No. 1 team is the No. 1-ranked singles player, Dasha Vidmanova. The senior captured the NCAA Singles National Championship in November and has built an 18-2 record against nationally ranked opponents. In doubles, Vidmanova and Mell Reasco make up the No. 12 pairing in the country. The Bulldogs are 48-24 in ranked matchups across singles and doubles play so far.
No. 13 Vanderbilt (15-4, 8-3 SEC) visits No. 1 Georgia (18-1, 11-0 SEC) on Friday with play set to begin at 4 p.m. Live streaming and live stats will be available online.
