Dores, Tide Set for Round Two in Tournament Opener

No. 12 seed Vanderbilt draws a second straight matchup against No. 13 seed Alabama to kick off play from SEC Championship event

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — No. 22 ranked Vanderbilt men’s tennis begins its journey at the 2026 SEC Men’s Tennis SEC Championship tournament with a second consecutive match against Alabama in the opening round on Wednesday.

Vanderbilt enters the week as the No. 12 seed in the bracket, with Alabama sitting just behind at No. 13. The two teams squared off just four days ago on the Dores’ Senior Day in Nashville. Vanderbilt (16-11, 5-9 SEC) set the tone early and never let go of the momentum, sinking Alabama (12-16, 3-11 SEC) 4-0 in its final home contest of the regular season. The black and gold netted their first doubles point since March 13 and followed with singles wins from senior Nathan Cox and freshmen Hoyoung Roh and Jack Satterfield to seal the victory.

It will be Vanderbilt’s first time matching up against the same SEC opponent in consecutive matches since the 2004-05 season. The Dores faced Kentucky in the final match that year before facing the Wildcats again to begin the conference tournament. Vandy holds a 13-10 all-time advantage against the Tide, with its Senior Day win ending a three-match skid in the series. The Commodores moved up one spot to No. 22 in the ITA team rankings following the result.

In the ITA individual rankings, Cox and Hoyoung continued their climb in doubles up to a new career-high of No. 11, besting last week’s No. 14 position. The two netted yet another top-10 victory with a 7-6 (5) takedown of Alabama’s No. 8 Vit Kalina and Andrii Zimnokh. It was the pair’s second win over a top-10 opponent in eight days after taking down Florida’s No. 8 Henry Jefferson and Tanapatt Nirundorn on April 10. The duo now owns four ranked victories in 14 total matches together, each of which have come against top-25 opponents.

Sophomore Pablo Martinez Gomez remains the top-ranked Commodore in singles, coming in at No. 68 in the most recent list. He has won two straight matches for Vanderbilt at the No. 1 position, both of which came as ranked victories. No. 85 Hoyoung is the other Dore in the singles rankings.

Alabama is led in the updated rankings by Kalina and Zimnokh, now No. 10. Zimnokh also represents the Crimson Tide in doubles alongside Jacob Olar at No. 41. Matic Kriznik comes in at No. 88 to top the team in singles play. No. 92 Kalina rounds out Alabama in the individual rankings.

12th-seeded Vanderbilt faces No. 13 seed Alabama in the opening round of tournament play on Wednesday at not before 6 p.m. from the Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas.
