CARY, N.C. — Vanderbilt women’s tennis was eliminated from the ITA All-American Championships main draw after a three-set battle with No. 1 North Carolina on Friday at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, North Carolina.
The Dores’ No. 12 pair of graduate Célia-Belle Mohr and sophomore Sophia Webster faced off against their highest-ranked opponent as a duo thus far, No. 1 Reese Brantmeier and Alanis Hamilton of North Carolina. After falling behind 3-1 early, Vandy netted two straight games to even the score at 3-3. The Tar Heels bounced back and notched three straight wins to close out the first set 6-3.
Mohr and Webster then dropped to an 0-2 deficit in the second as North Carolina grabbed control of the momentum. With their backs against the wall, the Dores rattled off four straight games to take a commanding 4-2 lead. Vandy used multiple extended rally points to close out the second set 6-3, forcing a third set tiebreaker for a spot in the semifinals. The Tar Heels, however, reclaimed the momentum in the third, pulling away to take the final set 10-6 for the match win. Throughout the first two sets, the teams were separated by just one point, 50-49, in favor of North Carolina.
Senior Bridget Stamel stayed alive in the consolation draw and will be the lone Dore competing on Saturday. The No. 27 ranked upperclassman opened her day against NC State’s No. 74 Gabriella Broadfoot. Stammel steadily chipped away at her Wolfpack counterpart, ultimately downing Broadfoot 6-3, 6-3 to take the match. She advanced past her second singles opponent of the day, No. 61 Shavit Kimchi of Duke, after Kimchi withdrew prior to the match start.
Stammel is set to face Appalachian State’s No. 106 Savannah Dada-Mascoll in the singles consolation round of 16 tomorrow at 8 a.m.; Dada-Mascoll took down No. 1 ranked DJ Bennett of Auburn in the main draw opener. The full women’s All-American tournament page is available online.
