Dores Surge in the Seventh

Nine-run frame leads to 13-7 win

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt baseball pushed nine runs across in the seventh inning Saturday against Saint Mary’s to clinch the three-games series with a 13-7 win at Hawkins Field.

The Commodores fell behind 4-0 early but pulled even in the bottom of the fourth with four runs on four hits. Colin Barczi doubled with one out and advanced to third on a fly out.

As was the story in Friday’s win, two-out hitting proved productive again Saturday as Braden Holcomb singled home Barczi to start the scoring. Jacob Humphrey singled and Jonathan Vastine worked a walk to load the bases. RJ Austin continued his torrid start to the season, clearing the bases and tying the game with a three-run double off the wall in left.

Saint Mary’s went back in front with a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to lead 7-4 going into the bottom of the seventh.

Vandy then sent 14 batters to the plate as part of a nine-run frame.

Austin worked a one-out walk and stole second base. Rustan Rigdon drew a walk and Riley Nelson lined a single to score Austin and Rigdon came home on a throwing error to make it a one-run game.

Brodie Johnston reached on a fielder’s choice and with two out, Barczi singled to put runners on the corners. Mac Rose came on to pinch hit and drove in the tying run with an infield single. After Holcomb walked, Humphrey laced a double to right-center, scoring Barczi and Mike Mancini who entered the game as a pinch runner.

Vastine kept things moving with a two-run single to left, scoring Holcomb and Humphrey. After a bunt-single by Austin and a walk to Rigdon, two more runs touched home on an error to give Vanderbilt a 13-7 lead.

Miller Green took over on the mound in the eighth and kept Saint Mary’s off the board as the Commodores took Game 2 of the series.

Austin led the offense with a 3-for-4 day, three RBI and two runs scored. Nelson, Barczi and Humphrey tallied two hits each and Humphrey and Vastine each drove in a pair of runs.

Vanderbilt improves to 6-1 on the season while Saint Mary’s falls to 4-3. The Commodores will go for the series sweep Sunday at noon.
