NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team kicked off the June Stewart Invitational Friday morning from the Currey Tennis Center. Day one action saw the ‘Dores take on William & Mary in doubles and Indiana in singles.
The Commodores continued their excellent fall play by sweeping the Tribe in doubles. Ashleigh Antal and Sydney Campbell teamed up at No. 1 doubles for an 8-5 win, while teammates Marie Casares and Courtney Colton won at No. 2, 8-3.
The ‘Dores cleaned up doubles at the third spot with an 8-1 victory by Lauren Mira and Georgina Sellyn.
In singles play, Vanderbilt was also dominant, winning six of eight matches as they faced the Hoosiers. Vandy’s Casares got the first singles win of the day for the at the No. 4 position with a 6-0, 6-1 over Indiana’s Shannon Murdy.
Shortly after, Antal defeated Alecia Kauss at the No. 3 spot 6-1, 6-1. Campbell proved strong as she won at the No. 1 spot 6-4, 6-1 over Katie Klyczek.
Both Mira and Colten had solid matches at No. 6 and No. 7 as they won by identical scores, 6-1, 6-1 against Kim Schmider and Kayla Fujimoto, respectively.
Action will continue tomorrow from the Currey Tennis Center starting at 10:30a.m., as Vanderbilt takes on Georgia Tech in doubles, while William & Mary faces Indiana. The ‘Dores will take on the Tribe in singles play, while Tech will face Indiana.
