USTA/ITA Regional Draws/Result
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Three Vanderbilt women’s tennis players advanced to the quarterfinals of the singles competition on Saturday at the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional at the Schwartz Tennis Center.
Junior Lauren Mira will represent the Commodores in the singles quarterfinals Sunday morning. Mira defeated Kentucky’s Nadia Ravita 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the quarters. Mira, the No. 4 seed, defeated Middle Tennessee State’s Irina Constantinide 7-5, 6-2, to move on to the round of 16. Mira will face Memphis’ Tiffany Welcher for a birth in the semifinals.
Sophomore Marie Casares battled through a tough three-set match to beat her round of 16 opponent, Alyssa Hibberd of Memphis 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. The Quito, Ecuador, native defeated Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum of Purdue in the second round 6-3, 6-1. Casares will play Julia Fellerhoff of Louisville tomorrow at 11:15 a.m.
Freshman Courtney Colton also advanced to the quarters have beating Purdue’s Lynda Xepoleas 7-5, 6-3. Colton advanced to the round of 16 after beating Kristina Labeja from Eastern Kentucky 6-3, 6-0. The Davie, Fla., native remains unbeaten so far this season. She will play Kata Szekely Sunday morning at 11:15 a.m.
Frances Altick lost a tough, two-set match to the No. 8 seed Rebecca Shine from Louisville 7-5, 7-6(2), in the round of 16. Altick advanced to the round of 16 after upsetting the No. 10 seed, Mara Schmidt from Purdue. After dropping the first set in a tight battle (6-7(3)), Altick rebounded to take the final two sets 6-4, 6-4.
Ashleigh Antal faced off against Purdue’s Claudia Escribens in the second round and won a tough three-set match 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. The sophomore was to play Tennessee’s Kata Szekely in the round of 16, but lost due to a walkover.
Georgina Sellyn had the tough task of taking on the No. 1 seed from Tennessee, Brynn Boren. Sellyn won the first match 6-3 before falling in the second 6-2. In the third and final set, however, Sellyn was forced to retire due to injury. With the loss, Sellyn is now eliminated from singles play.
In the doubles quarterfinal match for Antal and Casares, the duo defeated Kentucky’s Caitlin McGraw and Jessica Stiles, 8-5. The No. 3 seed Vandy duo will take on the No. 2 seed from Memphis (Alyssa Hibberd and Tiffany Welcher) Sunday morning for a spot in the doubles championship match.
Colton and Mira, who were the No. 6 seed in the doubles competition, fell in a heartbreaker to East Tennessee State’s Choo and Gerbassi in the quarterfinals, 9-8(5). The two teams battled back-and-forth the entire match before ETSU’s duo came out on top.
Play will resume Sunday morning at 9 a.m. with doubles action.
