NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team takes to the road for its final nonconference contest of the regular season, a Friday afternoon matchup at Northwestern.
Vandy enters Evanston on a five-match win streak after suffering their only loss of the season on Jan. 25. The Dores own an 8-3 record against the Wildcats, including a 4-3 victory at home last season. Northwestern’s last win in the series came in 2018.
The Wildcats have won back-to-back matches after dropping three in a row to No. 1 Georgia, No. 4 Stanford and No. 15 Pepperdine at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. They have not won a dual match versus an SEC opponent since 2019, in which Northwestern outlasted No. 18 LSU 4-3.
The two teams briefly met earlier this season at the June Stewart Invitational. Freshman Jayden Jagolinzer and senior Amy Stevens notched a 7-5 doubles win over Northwestern’s Neena Feldman and Autumn Rabjohns in the opening day of play. Jagolinzer then took down Rabjohns again in singles 7-5, 7-5.
Multiple Commodores are represented in the current ITA rankings, updated earlier today. The doubles pair of senior Célia-Belle Mohr and freshman Sophia Webster sit at No. 12. Junior Bridget Stammel leads the way in singles at No. 41, with Mohr close behind at No. 46 and sophomore Valeria Ray at No. 94. Vanderbilt sits just outside the top 25 team rankings at No. 31.
Ray comes into Friday a winner of 10 singles matches in a row and five straight doubles contests. Her singles run is the longest active streak among SEC underclassmen. In total, only two players in the conference have an active double-figure singles win streak: No. 15-ranked junior Nicole Khirin of Texas A&M is the other. Ray is also the only underclassmen in the conference with 20 singles wins or more.
Three other Dores possess active singles win streaks. Junior Sonya Macavei has notched four straight singles wins, matching a career-best streak set last season. Both Stammel and Webster are winners of three in a row.
Vanderbilt (6-1) seeks its sixth-straight win of the season tomorrow against Northwestern (6-4), with play set to begin at 4 p.m. Live streaming will be available online, with live stats accessible here at the start of the match.
