Dores Return to Columbus for Saturday Super Regional

Vanderbilt, Ohio State meet once more in postseason play, set for Super Regional Saturday match in Columbus

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — For the fifth time in six seasons, Vanderbilt women’s tennis makes its way to Columbus, Ohio for a postseason matchup with Ohio State, as the No. 14 seeded Commodores face the No. 3 seeded Buckeyes in an NCAA Super Regional contest on Saturday.

It is a series split even across the last four meetings, with Vanderbilt (22-9) picking up wins in 2024 and 2022 while Ohio State (25-4) came out on top in 2023 and 2021. Each match came with the Buckeyes serving as host. Despite the recent familiarity between the two, tomorrow’s contest will be the first at a Super Regional; each of the past four contests have come in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. It will also be the first time both teams face each other nationally seeded. In total, Ohio State holds a 6-3 record in the all-time series.

The Dores remain plentiful in the ITA individual rankings, led by the duo of graduate Célia-Belle Mohr and sophomore Sophia Webster at No. 7. Junior Valeria Ray and senior Bridget Stammel follow in the doubles rankings at No. 15. In singles, No. 12 Stammel tops the Commodores, joined by No. 30 Mohr and No. 33 Ray.

A pair of Buckeyes sit in the singles top five, with Lucciana Perry at No. 4 and Teah Chavez at No. 5. They are the only team with two top-five players, and one of just two schools with multiple singles players ranked inside the top 15. Rounding out Ohio State in the singles rankings is No. 76 Nao Nishino and No. 123 Audrey Spencer. In doubles, Perry and Flora Johnson come in at No. 23, followed by No. 34 Chavez and Hephzibah Oluwadare and No. 85 Nishino and Spencer.

Saturday’s match winner moves on to the NCAA Quarterfinals in Athens, Georgia. On the opposite side of the bracket, No. 6 Oklahoma and No. 11 Pepperdine will compete to decide the quarterfinal opponent for the team advancing out of Columbus. Vanderbilt last secured a berth into the quarterfinal round in 2019.

No. 14 Vanderbilt is set to face No. 3 Ohio State in the Columbus Super Regional at noon CT (1 p.m. ET) Saturday from the Auer Tennis Complex.
