NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt women’s tennis is set to host the annual June Stewart Invitational Friday through Sunday. Kentucky, Lipscomb, Ole Miss and Purdue make up the visiting schools.
This year’s invitational marks the 13th straight year the Dores have hosted the event, named in honor of Vanderbilt athletics trailblazer June Stewart. Stewart, a member of the Vanderbilt athletics hall of fame class of 2008, served as the Commodores’ sports information director from 1979-90 and spent over 30 years total at Vanderbilt. She helped bring publicity to the growing popularity of women’s collegiate athletics and was at the forefront of introducing influential changes to sports marketing and technology usage.
Five members of the team will compete in the invitational for the Dores: graduate Célia-Belle Mohr, seniors Naomi Katz and Sonya Macavei, and sophomores Sophia Webster and Trinetra Vijayakumar. Mohr, the No. 2 ranked singles player in the ITA preseason rankings, is slated for her first singles match of the fall season on Saturday. The invitational will be played in a round-robin format for singles and doubles, with singles being a first to two out of three sets and doubles consisting of one six-game set. In the event a singles match goes the distance, a super tiebreaker will be played instead of a third set.
Friday play is slated for an 8 a.m. start, with Vanderbilt matching up against Purdue and Lipscomb opponents in singles. Doubles is set to begin at not before 10:30 a.m., and a second round of singles between Kentucky, Ole Miss and Lipscomb will follow afterwards. Live stats are available online with live streaming available here. Draws and results can be viewed on the event’s ITA tournament page.
