NASHVILLE, Tenn. — No. 2 Vanderbilt finished off the team’s historic third straight Southeastern Conference series sweep with a 16-4 win over Missouri Sunday afternoon at Hawkins Field.
The Commodores’ (33-4, 14-1) third straight sweep in SEC play marks the first time in school history the Dores have swept three straight SEC series, and Vanderbilt did in impressive fashion on Sunday. The Commodores pounded out 18 hits to score 16 runs and run the team totals to 39 runs on 54 hits for the weekend. The team’s 39 runs are the most scored in a series since Vandy scored 39 runs in a series sweep against Tennessee in 2011.
The VU offense was primed from the start scoring three runs in the first before tacking on another run in the second to take a 4-0 lead. The Dores blew it open in the fourth inning sending 11 men to the plate to score six runs on five hits. Tony Kemp led off the inning with his team-best fourth triple of the season and scored the first run of the inning on Connor Harrell’s fielder’s choice. Mike Yastrzemski and Vince Conde followed by driving in runs in front of Spencer Navin. The Commodores’ catcher hammered his first home run of the season into the bleachers in left-center field for a two-run shot to make it 9-0 VU. Tony Kemp capped the rally with his second hit of the inning, a RBI-single to right field. Vandy piled on six more runs over the team’s final three at-bats to finish the day with at least one run in six of the team’s eight at-bats.
T.J. Pecoraro (1-0) earned the win in relief for Vanderbilt. The right-hander allowed one run on one hit over his three innings out of the bullpen. Pecoraro retired eight of the first nine batters he faced before a two-out walk in the seventh came around to score. Vandy starter Philip Pfeifer tossed four innings allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits and three walks. Missouri starter Keaton Steele (3-2) was roughed up for nine runs, eight earned, on eight hits and four walks in 3.2 innings to take the loss. All five Tigers (12-20, 4-11) pitchers allowed at least one run in the loss.
With the win, the Commodores extend their winning streak to a season-best 14 games – the longest winning streak for the Dores since the 2007 team set the school record with 19 straight victories to open the season. Vanderbilt’s offense has been robust over the team’s last nine games with the squad registering at least 10 hits in eight of the last nine, including six straight. During the last nine games, Vandy is averaging 14 hits per game.
The Commodores return to action on Tuesday night at Hawkins Field when Tennessee Tech comes to town. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.
