Dores open June Stewart Invitational

NASHVILLE, Tenn. ­– The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team opened the June Stewart Invitational going undefeated in doubles, and earning a 4-2 slate in singles.

Facing Wisconsin in tandems, VU limited the Badgers to a match-high two games.

The team of Emma Kurtz and Summer Dvorak defeated Sara Castellano and Mary Ann Rompf, 6-2. UW’s Lexi Keberle and Christina Zordani squeaked one game past VU’s Amanda Meyer and Emily Smith, 6-1, while Fernanda Contreras and Lauren Gish earned a 6-0 shutout victory against Michelle Linden and Melissa Pick.

In singles play, the Dores squared off against William & Mary, taking three matches in straight sets. Meyer earned the lone three-set win on Friday afternoon. The freshman out of Delray Beach, Fla. defeated the Tribe’s Rosie Cheng in an opening set tiebreaker, 7-6(3). Meyer came through in the final set to cement the victory, 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-4.

Both Kurtz and Dvorak earned dominant wins, limiting their opponents to three games. Smith, a junior out of Birmingham, England, defeated W&M’s Lauren Goodman, 6-2, 6-4. Vanderbilt’s two singles losses came in competitive matches by Gish and Payton Robinette.

The Commodores will be back in action tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. CT as the team takes on Wisconsin in singles.
