NASHVILLE, TENN – The Commodores were on fire Monday at the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional in Knoxville, Tenn. Vanderbilt will be well represented in Tuesday’s doubles and singles championships, with student-athletes competing in both events. The winners of Tuesday’s matches will have an automatic spot in the National Indoor Championships held in Flushing, N.Y.
“It was a great team showing overall,” said head coach Geoff Macdonald. “I thought today’s play was tremendous. Sometimes when you play a teammate the level of play goes down, but I thought it was quite the opposite today. They all really went after each other. We’re excited for tomorrow’s play since we have Courtney (Colton) and Sydney (Campbell) facing one another and then competing together for the doubles title.”
The road to the singles championship match was filled with opportunities, as Vanderbilt was the only team left in tournament competition by the semifinals.
No. 1 seed, Sydney Campbell, squared off against fellow teammate Ashleigh Antal. No. 50 Campbell came out victorious over Antal, 7-6, 6-1. A few courts over Astra Sharma and Courtney Colton were battled against each other for a spot in the final. With matches taking place on the University of Tennessee `s courts No. 63 Colton defeated Sharma; 7-5, 6-4.
Campbell and Colton will battle one another on Tuesday in the singles championship. With an all Commodore final, Vanderbilt will have at least one representative at the National Indoor Championships.
The No. 17 VU tandems team punched their ticket to the finals after defeating the No. 2 seed from Tennessee in a 6-3, 6-0 victory. The tandems team faces the No. 1 doubles seed out Kentucky. The UK duo of Nadia Ravita and Aldila Sutjiadi are currently ranked No. 12 in the country and eliminated Antal and Sharma in quarterfinals action.
Tomorrow’s final day of tournament action will begin at 9 a.m. ET with the remainder of matches taking place at UT’s Goodfriend Tennis Center.
