NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt women’s tennis will begin play at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships on Thursday in West Lafayette, Ind.
Vanderbilt is in the Ohio Valley Regional with action running through Oct. 21. Qualifying play begins Thursday, while the main draw starts Friday.
“We’ve been having some great practices,” said Vanderbilt head coach Geoff Macdonald. “I love this tournament because we’re all going to be together as a team, which is the first time this season. We’ll see a lot of big time competition.”
The Commodores are coming off their first competition of the season at the ITA All-American and Roberta Alison Fall Classic at the beginning of the month. Vanderbilt sent Lauren Mira, Ashleigh Antal and Marie Casares to the ITA All-American, while Megan Gornet, Frances Altick, Courtney Colton, Maggie Leavell and Georgina Sellyn participated at the Roberta Alison.
As a whole, the team will head into the weekend with a lot of confidence and looking to carry over momentum.
The group representing Vanderbilt in Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the Roberta Alison Fall Classic recorded 14 total wins between singles and doubles action.
Colton and Sellyn each won their respective flights in singles play to finish the weekend 3-0. Altick rebounded after a tough defeat in her first match to win her final two singles matches.
Leavell and Gornet rounded out the singles action as they went 1-2 and 0-3, respectively.
In doubles play, the duo of Colton and Leavell went 3-0, while Altick and Sellyn went 2-1.
At the ITA All-American, Casares registered the lone win for Vanderbilt as she won one-of-two singles matches.
With the fall season quickly coming to an end, Coach Macdonald has already seen improvements from his team since the start of fall practices.
“I think they are learning more on concentrating and focusing,” Macdonald said. “They are learning more about the competitive, tenacious mentality you need to have to play at this level. The practice sets have been the best we’ve had here in years.”
Vanderbilt will take the court again Nov. 2-4, when the Commodores travel to Memphis, Tenn., for the Memphis Collegiate Invitational.
