Dores halt Memphis' win streak

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – No. 12 Vanderbilt put an end to No. 22 Memphis’ four-match win streak Wednesday evening with an impressive 5-2 win at the Currey Tennis Center.

The Commodores finished the non-conference season with a 7-4 record, as they prepare for SEC play this 8629454.jpegweekend. With the loss, Memphis dropped to 6-3 overall this season.

Vanderbilt took a 1-0 advantage into singles play after holding off the Tigers in doubles, as the Commodores were able to get wins in the Nos. 1 and 3 positions.

At No. 1 doubles, Ashleigh Antal and Marie Casares defeated Tiffany Welcher and Alyssa Hibberd, 8-6. The Vandy duo recorded their first win in the No. 1 position this season. Frances Altick and Georgina Sellyn were able to outlast Caroline Wegner and Stefanie Mikesz, 8-6, on court No. 3 to clinch the doubles point.

Courtney Colton gave Vanderbilt a much-needed win in the No. 2 spot. The freshman from Davie, Fla., defeated Liza Tymchenko, 6-3, 6-1. Colton leads the Commodores with 15 wins on the season.

In No. 1 singles, Lauren Mira was able to bounce back from a 6-1 loss in the first set to win sets two and three, 6-3, 6-1, over No. 23 Courtney Collins. The win for Mira over Collins improved her record to 6-1 versus ranked players this spring.

Leading 3-1, Vanderbilt received the match-clinching win from Casares at the No. 3 spot. Casares won the first set 6-3, before falling in set two, 1-6. The sophomore then fell behind early in the final set, before putting together a string of points to win, 6-4. When playing in the No. 3 position, Casares is 5-1 this season.

After the match was clinched for Vanderbilt, Altick tacked another point on with her win at No. 6. The Monroe, La., native defeated Wegner, 6-0, 6-2.

Memphis’ Skylar Kuykendall recorded a straight-sets win over Antal, 6-1, 6-2, on the No. 4 court. Antal was 7-0 in dual play before falling in today’s match. Hibberd then defeated Sellyn in a tough three-set match on court No. 5, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(2).

The Commodores begin SEC action with a trip to No. 63 LSU (March 1) and No. 50 Arkansas (March 3).
