NASHVILLE, Tenn. – It was another successful day out on the courts for the Vanderbilt women’s tennis team, who went 1-1 in doubles, and 10-0 in main draw singles.
Vanderbilt boasts five singles players in Monday’s quarterfinals, the most of any team in the tournament.
With an interesting turn of events; the No. 1 seed out of Vandy, Sydney Campbell, and teammate Ellie Yates face one another tomorrow on UT courts. This is the second time this fall a Commodore has had to face a fellow teammate. The first encounter was at the Furman Fall Classic, when Courtney Colton and Marie Casares competed for a flight championship.
After a 6-0, 6-0 performance in the round of 16, Ashleigh Antal takes on SEC and interstate rival Henderson out of the University of Tennessee. Henderson is the only Volunteer left in singles competition.
Astra Sharma continues her tournament action tomorrow after knocking out the No 7 seeded Wind from Memphis; 7-6, 6-3. The sophomore takes on ETSU’s Lyn Lee Choo on Monday.
Courtney Colton seeks retribution against Purdue’s Daniela Vidal tomorrow in singles; as Vidal and doubles parter Bernard-Feig eliminated Yates and Casares from tournament play. Colton looks to doubles partner Sydney Campbell for advise as she defeated Vidal last weekend at the June Stewart Invitational; 6-7(3), 6-2, 1-0(4).
The Commodores went 1-1 in doubles on Sunday, with Antal and Sharma losing to the No. 1 seed out of Kentucky (Ravita/Sutjiadi) in quarterfinals; 8-5. The No. 3 seed, Colton and Campbell, defeated Lindl/Olivarez out of UT, 8-1 to advance to semis. The duo takes on the Vols’ Williams and Henderson. Henderson gets a double dose of the ‘Dores, as she is also Antal’s singles opponent.
All matches will be played at Goodfriend Tennis Center for the remainder of the tournament. Doubles will start at 9:00 a.m ET tomorrow, and singles will follow.
