NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team earned three singles victories on Saturday at the Curry Tennis Center to close out day two of the June Stewart Invitational.
Starting out day two with singles freshmen Marcella Cruz and Anna Ross competed in the first round of singles. Both freshmen fought hard, but ultimately fell short in their matches.
In doubles, Ross and senior Emma Kurtz faced Kansas pair, Karvouni and Delgado. The Commodore duo picked up their first loss of the tournament by falling short, 8-2.
Junior Amanda Meyer and freshman Dasha Kourkina took on Princeton’s Howard and McKee. The pair started strong, however, Princeton outlasted the Commodore duo, 8-2.
Heading into singles play, Kurtz collected the Commodores’ first victory of the day by swiftly defeating Middle Tennessee State’s Zani Barnard in a straight set win, 6-2, 6-0, to claim her second consecutive singles victory of the Invitational.
Bouncing back from her defeat in the first singles round, Cruz dominated to take down Middle Tennessee State’s Klapman, 6-1, 6-2.
Closing out the day for the Dores with a victory, Meyer defeated Burrows (MTSU), 6-2, 6-1, to earn her first singles victory of the weekend.
The Commodores will continue play in the Invitational on Sunday at 10 a.m. with singles play followed by doubles play. The second round of singles will begin following the conclusion of doubles.
