FORT WORTH, Texas – The fifth-ranked Commodores finished in eighth place with a team score of 879 (293-293-293) at the inaugural Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational at the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, home to the PGA Tour’s Crowne Plaza Invitational. Senior Hunter Stewart and junior Carson Jacobs were Vanderbilt’s top finishers, with each finishing in a tie for 11th individually.
The Commodores finished five shots behind seventh-place Duke, who finished with a team score of 874.
“I thought it was another case of struggling to get a fourth score,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “It was really the first poor round Hunter has had in a while and when your best player doesn’t play well, it’s hard for you to really have a good round. We talked about competing and having the low round of the day, and we weren’t able to do that. I was really proud of Carson being four-over par through seven holes and fighting it back to shoot one-over. Ben Fogler was really steady today. I was really proud of the way those guys competed. I think most important for us right now is to remember that we’re a good team, but there were some good lessons learned on a championship golf course. We all have to pay closer attention to detail and get back to what makes us a good team and that is going to start at home, during practice and preparation for the next event.”
Commodore Scores
Stewart and Jacobs each finished with a total of 217. Jacobs and senior Ben Fogler each carded the team’s lowest lowest score of the day on Tuesday with each shooting a one-over, 71. Fogler finished in a tie for 29th with a 222 (76-75-71), Theo Humphrey carded a 224 (77-73-74) and finished in a tie for 39th, and junior Zack Jaworski ended the tournament in 53rd position after posting a three-round total of 230 (76-76-78).
Team and Individual Winners
Pac-12 member Oregon won the team title by six strokes over Stanford, with the Ducks’ Thomas Lim winning medalist honors. With the individual win, Lim earns an exemption into the PGA Tour’s Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial in 2015.
