ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Vanderbilt women’s team was aiming for its second upset of the weekend, but was unable to hold off Michigan on Sunday morning, falling 4-3 to the nations eighth ranked team.
Michigan got out to an early 1-0 after sweeping all three doubles matches. This was the first match all season that the Commodores (5-2) lost the doubles point.
In the No. 3 doubles match, Keilly Ulery and Lauren Mira dropped an 8-3 decision to Mimi Nguyen and Sam Critser. The Wolverines clinched the doubles point when Alex Leatu and Rachael Dillon lost a tough match on court one.
In singles play, Jackie Wu fell to No. 11 Denise Muresan, 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 1 match, and Leatu dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision on court two as the Wolverines took a 3-0 lead. Ulery and Dillon got the Commodores within one after winning each of their matches. Ulery topped Rika Tatsuno, 7-5, 6-0 on court six, while Dillon defeated Mimi Nguyen, 6-4, 7-5, in the No. 5 match.
Whitney Taney clinched the match for the Wolverines with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Mira in the No. 4 match. On court three, Chelsea Preeg battled with Brooke Boleander, and eventually defeated her, 7-6(8), in the tiebreaker set after splitting the first two sets, 2-6, 6-4.
Vanderbilt returns home to host MTSU Feb. 20 in the final tune-up before Southeastern Conference play begins in early March.
