NASHVILLE, Tenn. — No. 16 Vanderbilt women’s tennis dropped its second straight match in a 4-3 defeat to No. 13 Texas on Friday.
The Dores began the match by securing their 11th doubles point in 14 total matches. No. 9-ranked senior Célia-Belle Mohr and freshman Sophia Webster cruised to a 6-1 victory for their eighth win in a row. The pair are now 16-5 at the No. 1 position together. Sophomore Valeria Ray and freshman Trinetra Vijayakumar sealed the early advantage at No. 3 doubles, fending off Carmen Herea and Eszter Meri in a 7-6 (4) battle.
Vandy generated leads at all four available courts to kick off singles play. Texas did not let the Dores hold the momentum for long, forcing third sets across the board. No. 44 Mohr held on in the final frame at No. 1 singles, giving Vanderbilt a 2-0 lead with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 win over No. 38 Sabina Zeynalova. Mohr pushes her win streak to nine and improves to 6-2 against nationally ranked opponents.
No. 119 Ray continued her own winning streak, moving past No. 70 Ashton Bowers 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 for her 16th straight win. The result is her second ranked singles victory of the season and puts her four away from tying the program record for consecutive wins. Despite the 3-2 lead, Texas continued to hang around. The Longhorns pulled ahead in both matches at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, eventually sealing the contest at their bottom positions.
No. 16 Vanderbilt (11-3, 4-2 SEC) returns to play Sunday against defending champion No. 2 Texas A&M (15-1, 8-0 SEC) at 1 p.m. For more information, updates and exclusive game day content, follow the Vanderbilt women’s tennis team, @VandyWTennis, on Instagram and X.
