Auburn, Ala. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team opened up Southeastern Conference play with a strong performance at Auburn in a top-25 matchup.
Anessa Lee and Anna Ross both picked up ranked wins in the Commodores’ loss Friday as they defeated their opponents on the top two courts.
Seeing Doubles
- Anna Ross and Yufei Long dropped the doubles on Court 1 to 44th-ranked Selin Ovunc and Ariana Arseneault, 6-2, as the Dores opened the day.
- With a 6-3 loss on Court 3, the Tigers took the doubles point as Marcella Cruz and Dasha Kourkina fought hard but ultimately dropped the court.
- Anessa Lee and Holly Staff were up 5-3 when their match was called.
Singles
- On Court 3, the Dores fell to 2-0 against the Tigers with Staff falling in two sets to No. 104 Carolyn Ansari.
- Amy Stevens continued her hot streak with a win in straight sets on Court 5, 6-3 and 6-1. The rookie now boasts a record of 6-1 this dual season.
- Auburn’s Yu Chen claimed Court 6 over Dasha Kourkina with 6-2 and 6-4 set wins halfway through the match.
- On Court 4, Cruz dropped a nailbiter in set one with a 7-6(3) tie break before falling 6-2 for Auburn’s match-clinching point.
- After falling in a close first set, 6-4, Lee battled back to take the next two and clinch the Commodores’ second point of the night with 6-0 and 6-3 wins.
- Ross secured the Dores’ third and final point of the match with a three-set thriller on Court 1. After clinching the first match with a quick 6-1 win, Ross and her opponent, No. 60 Selin Ovunc battled to two tie breaks throughout the rest of the match with Auburn taking set two, 7-6(3), before Ross came back to win set three, 7-6(4).
