Dores Fall in Kickoff Weekend Opener

Vanderbilt women's tennis suffers 4-1 defeat to UCSB, faces Yale in consolation

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — No. 21 Vanderbilt women’s tennis was knocked off in its opening match at ITA Kickoff Weekend, falling 4-1 to UCSB on Saturday.

Despite opening a lead at No. 1 doubles with No. 11 ranked senior Célia-Belle Mohr and freshman Sophia Webster, the Dores fell behind at their other two doubles positions. Vandy was unable to mount a bounce back in either match, and UCSB nabbed the doubles point to begin the day.

The momentum continued to swing the Gauchos’ way in singles. Sophomore Valeria Ray clinched the lone singles victory of the day for Vanderbilt, a 6-3, 6-4 defeat of UCSB’s Ali Benedetto. Ray is now the team leader in singles wins with 11. Three Commodores forced a third set after dropping the opening frame, but none were successful in completing a comeback.

Vanderbilt moves on to the consolation round of ITA Kickoff Weekend, matching up against Yale tomorrow. The Dores are 2-0 all-time against the Bulldogs, with match wins in 2009 and 2013.

Play is set to begin at 9 a.m. with live streaming available online. Live stats can be accessed here at the start of the match. For more information, updates, and exclusive game day content, follow the Vanderbilt women’s tennis team, @VandyWTennis, on Instagram and X.
