NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt dropped Sunday’s series finale to No. 4 Texas, 4-3, in 10 innings at Hawkins Field.
The Commodores got a clutch hit from Rustan Rigdon to pull even in the eighth but were unable to extend the game in the 10th after Texas scored the go-ahead run.
Wyatt Nadeau gave the Dores a strong outing on the mound, holding the Longhorns to two runs on four hits over 6.0 innings.
Braden Holcomb opened the scoring in the bottom of the third, bringing in two runs on a double to the gap in left.
Texas tied things up with two runs of their own in the top of the fourth and the score would remain 2-2 until the eighth.
The Longhorns took a 3-2 lead on a sac fly with the bases loaded, but Brennan Seiber limited the damage to keep it a one-run game.
In the home half, Tommy Goodin earned a two-out walk and Cade Sears came on to pinch run. Sears took off for second on the first pitch to Rigdon who ripped a line drive down the line in right. Sears came all the way around from first to tie the game at 3-3.
Vanderbilt threatened in the bottom of the ninth with a pair of singles, but Texas escaped to jam to send the game to extras.
The Longhorns scored the go-ahead run on a bases-loaded walk, but again Vanderbilt was able to limit the damage and stay within a run.
Rigdon singled with one out and Ryker Waite was hit by a pitch as the Dores put the tying and winning runs on base. Texas’ Sam Cozart recorded back-to-back strikeouts to close the door as the Longhorns took the series finale 4-3.
Vanderbilt is home again on Tuesday against Middle Tennessee at 6 p.m.
