FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The No. 5 Vanderbilt Commodores rounded out SEC road competition with a 4-2 record, having defeated the 27th-ranked Arkansas Razorbacks, 4-3.
The Dores got off to a slow start, falling on courts one and three in doubles to give the Hogs the one-point advantage heading into singles play.
Astra Sharma and Frances Altick earned the first doubles victory in a commanding 6-2 victory on court two. But Arkansas followed with a 6-2 win of their own, coming in a big upset, as No. 77 Lysa/Hudson defeated No. 10 Courtney Colton and Sydney Campbell. The decider on court three went the Razorbacks way as well, as Georgina Sellyn and Fernanda Contreras fell to Craft/Cepelyte, 6-3.
In singles, Contreras put the Commodores on the board in a clean 6-3, 6-3 victory on court six. The VU victory was followed by a loss on court five, as Sellyn fell to Jurasic, 7-5, 6-3. No. 13 Altick leveled the score for the `Dores once again, with a win over No. 86 Oparenovic, 7-5, 6-4. Sharma, ranked 21st in the nation gave Vandy the 3-2 advantage as the Aussie escaped a hard fought match on three over Hudson, 7-6(5), 6-4.
After taking an easy 6-1 lead heading into the second set, No. 25 Campbell dropped the second to split on court one, 6-3. Arkansas’ No. 34 Lysa earned her third victory over a top-25 opponent, taking the third set tiebreaker, 7-6(5).
At 3-all, focus shifted to Colton who was up 5-4 in her third set against Craft on court four. The senior stay composed throughout the final few points on the match to seal the victory for Vanderbilt, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.
